Ptar is a frog living in a swamp sewing sounds and blasting crystalline energy out of his corneas. Appearing here in his Rogue Jury guise, his latest EP, “The Fool” is his first for VLSC Records and it couldn’t land at a better time. Opening track and lead single “Down The River” is a perfect convalescent journey downstream. The mélange of analog electronics, softsynths, vocals, live instrumentation, field recordings and samples blurs together into a warm weightless escape from our endless doomscroll. In a world of shallow deep house and techno sans technique, Ptar artfully carves out new spaces for experiencing familiar sounds. “Mother’s Mother” drifts by like fleeting glimpses of the world from the window seat of a train, perhaps subliminally incepting us with this image via a subtle MARTA sample buried amidst the cascading jazzy dub. “Get Right” ramps up the energy while maintaining the previous tracks’ atmosphere, juxtaposing a buzzy French Electro bass line with deeply verbed vocals and echoing synth shards until it finally all coalesces in the euphoric rush of the final minute. "Dragondance" closes out the EP with an evolving lush ambience hovering above skittering techno breaks and sub bass pressure.
